Buying Auto Insurance? 3 Questions To Make Sure To Ask

Insurance Blog

Whether you are buying car insurance for the first time ever or you are thinking about changing car insurance companies, there are certain questions that you need to make sure that you ask yourself to ensure that you are getting the most bang for your buck. Otherwise, you may wind up paying more than you need to each month or you may find yourself not getting the best coverage for the money that you are spending. Here are three questions you will want to ensure that you ask when you go to purchase insurance for your vehicle:

Question #1: Are Comprehensive AND Collision Coverage Necessary?

As a general rule, if you are leasing a vehicle, the lender is going to require that you carry both of these on your vehicle until the note has been paid in full. If you do not have a loan on a vehicle, then you have the option to only carry collision – often the case for older vehicles that have lower Kelly Blue Book values.

It is important to understand the difference between the two types of coverage to determine whether you want to spend money on both. Comprehensive coverage will pay or any type of damage that occurs as a result of vandalism, theft, fire, etc. Collision coverage will pay for repairs to your vehicle in the event of an accident, regardless of whether you or someone else is to blame.

Question #2: Should You Opt for Underinsured and Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

There are certain states that actually require this coverage, so it is important that you check into whether your state mandates this. If your state does not, then it is important that you consider what happens if you do not carry this coverage. For example, if you do not have collision or under- or uninsured motorist coverage and you are involved in a collision with someone who does not have insurance either, then there will be no insurance to fall back on for your car repairs.

Question #3: Are You Receiving All the Discounts That You Are Eligible and Qualify for?

In today's day and age, everyone is about saving money when and where they can – auto insurance is no different. There are a lot of different discounts that you may be eligible for, but many of them you may not know about unless you come right out and ask your insurance agent about them. Most people are only aware of anti-theft, safe driver and multi-car discounts, but there are more. For example, with the right qualifications, you may be eligible for low-mileage, good grades (only for students), and eco-friendly discounts.
